mosaicdefIn early Greek and Roman times Mosaics were a major form of expression and decorating using small stones but then in the Byzantine and early Christian period stones were replaced with glass and gold which made the walls and ceilings of these new Christian basilicas sparkle with a heavenly glow.

These pictorial mosaics were not only decorative but also functional in telling the stories of the bible as painted frescos would do in the years to follow.
Today mosaics are done with almost any material on any surface and any size. Whereas in the past they were primarily used in conjunction with architecture today they are seen anywhere – functional or decorative.
